Humans are a social animal, which allows us to achieve incredible things. The Apollo missions, the Human Genome Project, global supply chains, and universal healthcare are all examples of human creations that are simply not possible to achieve as an individual. Even at smaller scales, like building a house, operating a soup kitchen, or simply chatting at a local book club, humans regularly come together to be part of something bigger than themselves.
My current work, the Genomic Cross Stitch Project, brings together the labour contributed by multiple stitchers and artists to form a single, unified piece. The ritualistic, repetitive nature of stitching and adherence to a defined pattern, though seemingly random, is what allows each individual component to join as one. But at it’s heart, this project is only possible by the donation of time and skill from multiple individuals. It’s a coming together to create something larger.
